Grace Lutheran Cemetery, one of 3 Lutheran cemeteries in Grattan Twp. is situated on Jane Street in Eganville, along the Bonnechere River. In center-Eganville where Hwy #60 joins #4l at the traffic light, continue straight for one block to the service station on your left, and Jane street begins on that corner. Follow Jane Street to the dead-end and the three cemeteries are on your left. The first cemetery you reach is Grace Lutheran, followed by Melville United, and the last at the end of the road is St. Luke’s. The whole is surrounded by a black wrought-iron fence in excellent repair and each cemetery has its own name sign at the gate. Grace has a lovely flower bed to the side of the name sign and although the cemeteries are on the side of a rather steep hill, the grass is well mowed and cared for. The soil is quite sandy, few large trees, therefore the grass is sparse. Grace Lutheran Church is across Jane Street and down one block, a modern building with a striking bell-tower.
It was noted while doing the recording of all three cemeteries, how the spelling of the German names have changed over the generations. The original “BOEHM” went to BEHM, then finally to BIMM. MULLER became MILLER, and LEHMANN is now LAYMAN. I found also that the German verses in hard-to-read script gradually shortened and became anglicized as the generations progressed. Religions also changed – Lutheran joined Baptist, Presbyterian and United religions, hence the same names appearing in the various church-affiliated cemeteries.
Grace Lutheran Cemetery has a cemetery committee to look after the care and maintenance of the grounds and the placing of grave markers and memorial stones. (From Grace History 100 Years, 1888-1988)
