cemetery St. Joseph’s RC

 
This church and cemetery were part of the missions by the Diocese of Pembroke. It is located at Esmonde, Ontario, 3 kms from Hwy. #41, south of Eganville, in Grattan Twp.

The road is paved, and the church and grounds are well cared for. The present priest is Father Thomas Fitzpatrick, who with his parents see to the repairs and maintenance of the church when assistance is needed in this capacity. The grass mowing is in charge Rita McPherson, a difficult job as the cemetery is on
the side of a hill.

In front of the church is a monument which reads “In gratitude to St. Joseph The Worker and in memory of the Pioneers of the Opeongo Region who with faith, Prayer and Industry prepared for generations to come, a goodly Spiritual Heritage. Dedicated Aug. 7, 1983.”

” …. returning now to the history of Esmonde, this settlement grew during the years 1870-1890 so that a splendid stone church 60′ X 35′ with the old church serving as the sacristy was erected on the Opeongo Line under the direction of Mr. C. Caron of Renfrew, contractor, and dedicated to St. Joseph in September 1890.

A new bell was installed in 1903, and a part of land was set aside for a cemetery.” (from “Lift Up Your Hearts” by Rev. Joseph C. Legree, page 272/3).
