The Renfrew Mercury negatives, including some negatives from the Perth & Carleton Place papers. In 2004, Heritage Renfrew received an unexpected donation by Fred Runge, President of Runge Publishing Inc., of hundreds of thousand 35mm negatives covering the years 1961 to 1999. The collection has been now been cataloged and sorted into chronological order thanks to the efforts of our Members and even visitors.
This collection now provides a companion tool for our micro-filmed collection of the Renfrew Mercury newspaper. Previously, visitors researching articles written in the Mercury had to content themselves with a poor quality photo static reproduction of photographs accompanying the article. Now researchers can procure photocopies of the digital images of these negatives which originally accompanied the printed story or by-line.
So far, images have been scanned from negatives for the years 1961 to 1992 but more are added daily. Only a few of these photographs were published in the newspaper. The vast majority remained unused and were either more pictures relating to the article that appeared or were taken but no article appeared.
Photos from community events and candid shots from the entire surrounding area. Renfrew, Douglas, Admaston, Horton, Cobden, Calabogie, Pakenham, Carleton Place, Perth.
The images below are samples only, down-sized to 7% of the original resolution. If you see an image of interest, it is probably one of many in a series of negatives. If you would like to obtain copies of the original images or have the negative re-scanned to higher resolution, visit the archives or contact us at info@HeritageRenfrew.ca.
