Project 1 – William Jamieson

WILLIAM JAMIESON ESQ.
ANOTHER SETTLER GONE
Renfrew Mercury September 12 1884

William Jamieson Esq. J.P. died at his residence in Horton, on Monday 8th inst. After having been confined to his bed by paralysis for the last three or four years. The deceased was born at Stonehouse near Glasgow Scotland, 67 years ago, and emigrated to Canada when about 17 years of age. He first worked in the Township of Drummond, and then spent some time in Utica and Rochester. A year or two afterwards he came to Horton on a visit to the late David Barr and the late John Stewart, who had come to Canada in the same ship with him. He remained in Horton – working for a time with John and Alex Martin, and then purchasing the farm now owned by Mr. Robert Leitch. This he sold to the late Archibald Leitch, and purchased the property owned by his son John A. on which he lived for the remainder of his life. He married a daughter of the late Henry Airth Sr. by whom he had a numerous family. For many years Mr. Jamieson took an active part in local public affairs, as councilor and Reeve. But latterly, he gradually withdrew from them, and participated actively only as Treasurer of the Township; as a member of the Agricultural Society and as President of the South Renfrew Association.

Up till the time of his illness which confined him to bed, he frequently called upon to act as Magistrate and in that capacity was perhaps generally known. As one of the early settlers in the County he was widely connected and his funeral which took place on Tuesday afternoon was probably the most numerously attended that has ever taken place in this section.
