The cemetery only contains two stones which are towards Haleys Station from the house and are fenced in with a large wooden fence and gate.

The Lakeside cemetery is an old pioneer cemetery that is situated on the banks of Calabogie Lake near the Calabogie Lodge at what is known as the Barryvale area. There are a lot of cottages in the area and one must go by several of them to get to the cemetery. There are on about 37 stones in the cemetery and quite a few bases where stones once stood. Apparently many years ago when logging was predominant in the area woodsmen who lost their lives in logging accidents and drowned in the lake are buried there.

Hillcrest Cemetery is an old cemetery situated on the road to Lanark and is the public cemetery for Calabogie. In it there are stones with names of the people who pioneered the area.

Dacre Memorial Cemetery

“Jesus said… I am the way, the truth… and the life. John 14:6”

So reads the sign marking this small private cemetery on Highway 132 almost two kilometres southeast of Dacre, Ont. Dacre is a small village on the old Opeongo Road, a colonization route that broke ground from the Ottawa River through Renfrew to the west. In 1873, the village boasted two hotels and two stores. Today, it has a store and a motel.

The cemetery sits on a slight hill under two towering pines and in view of Constant Creek. It has no specific religious affiliation, but has generally provided a last resting place for Protestant families of the Dacre area while their Roman Catholic neighbors were buried three miles down the road at Mount St. Patrick.

The oldest known burial in the cemetery is that of 15-year-old John Holmes in 1857. The next people to be buried there, in 1858 and 1859, were United Empire Loyalists David Hunter and Esther Truesdale of Vermont. The Hunter family came to dominate the graveyard. William, a son of David and Esther, owned a sawmill upstream on Constant Creek. He, his wife, all four of his sons and two of his daughters are buried in the cemetery.

Dacre Memorial, on Lot 17 in Brougham Township’s Range D North, was still in use in 1987.

The present church at the village of Griffith first came into being after 1887. Previous to that, mass was said in the homes in the area although there was a chapel built earlier around 1861, which fell into disuse. Until the new church was built, mass was offered again in private homes.

The land for the church was acquired from the Government by Bishop LORRAIN, on the sandy plains. It is a frame building in the shape of the cross 30′ X 35′. A chapel was constructed in the basement about 1900. Many renovations and repairs have since taken place inside and out so that the interior is completely modernized.

The cemetery is adjacent to the church on the north side, fenced and well cared for by Mr. Wilfred VARREN in 1991.

There are several families of French descent buried here, who came up the St. Lawrence and Madawaska Rivers from the Gaspé area of Quebec. Many young men who drowned in river accidents on log drives are buried here. Their sturdy boots
were left on top of the graves for several years after the burial. The majority of these rivermen have no tombstones to mark their graves, but are mainly situated between stones #128 and #129.

The church and cemetery are located approximately 1 Km. from Hwy 41S, after leaving Hwy 132 from Renfrew to Dacre. When approaching Griffith from the north (Renfrew) turn left onto Church Road, then right until the Flying Club Road. The church and cemetery overlook the Madawaska River at this intersection. Church Road continues south to Hwy. 41 at the Madawaska River.

The St. Gabriel’s Memory Book is a celebration of the former mission church of St. Gabriel Archangel in what is now the Township of Greater Madawaska in Renfrew County.

The first section records the history of this church and its people, from the coming of the pioneer priest, Father John McNulty, in 1843 to the building of St. Gabriel’s in 1854, through to its closing in 1952.

Section two contains many personal memories of former parishioners and their descendants.

Section three honours the people who lie at rest in the beautiful little graveyard surrounding the church, with its view of the mighty Madawaska River.

MT. ST. PATRICK CEMETERY (old) is located on Lot 5 Con 15, Admaston Township at the rear of the Roman Catholic Church in the village of Mt. St.Patrick. It is an old pioneer cemetery and although many of the stones have long disappeared the cemetery is quite full. A newer cemetery called the Holy Well cemetery is now being used for burials. The cemetery is well kept up and many of the stones date back to the early 1850’s. Most of the pioneer settlers buried there came from various parts of Ireland.

There are still some burials being done in the old family plots in the cemetery. The earliest burials took place in 1846 according to the Church records.

HOLY WELL CEMETERY is located on Lot 1 Con XIV in the Village of Mt. St. Patrick, Brougham Township up along a side road about a mile from the old cemetery. Here there is a holy well that has been blessed by some of the older priests. Father McCormac a well loved and respected priest who died by drowning is buried in the cemetery, as are other priests who served in the parish of Mount St. Patrick as well as other parishes in the area.

At the back of this book there is also a section that has all the records of burials according to what was in the church records. Unfortunately the years 1851 to 1866 the records were kept at St. Francis Xavier church in Renfrew and most of the records are in French and very few records of burials in Mt. St. Patrick cemetery were kept. The records that were available have all been transcribed into this book. The church burials records starting in 1846. Some of the burials that took place from the church were of parishioners from another area close by and they were buried in the cemeteries closer to home. For example, there was a cemetery at Griffith and some of the people buried from the church at Mount St. Patrick were buried in Griffith, some in Douglas and some in other cemeteries.
